Moroccan Coast Guards Rescue 115 Migrants

The Moroccan navy’s coast guards on Monday rescued 115 undocumented migrants onboard two flimsy boats en route to Spain’s Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean.

The migrants were all from sub-Saharan African countries, the Moroccan Army said in two separate statements.

A navy unit intercepted 23 migrants off the coast of the city of Tan Tan, and rescued another 92 migrants, including 3 women, in another operation about 155 km southwest off Dakhla.

Morocco has become a popular transit country for African migrants seeking to reach Europe for better living conditions.

The International Organization for Migration said that at least 559 people lost their lives trying to cross from northwestern Africa to the Canary Islands in 2022.
