Romania denies Russian drones used in Ukraine attack crossed into NATO airspace

Romania is on high alert after reports of Russian suicide drones violating the NATO member’s airspace.

Romania has denied that Russian suicide drones used to target the city of Izmail in Ukraine have violated NATO airspace.

One of the drones was reported to have crashed in Romanian territory, according to witnesses but this was later denied by the Romanian military.

Romania is a NATO member.

The Russian army used Iranian-made Shahed-136/131 attack drones to target Izmail on the night of August 2.

Several structures were severely damaged, including the three-story Sea Port building, the elevator, grain hangars, tanks at a cargo terminal, manufacturing and storage facilities, and the administrative building of the Ukrainian Danube Shipping Company.

Visegrád 24 Reporting via the Romanian media outlet Digi24 wrote on Twitter: “Some of the suicide drones Russia used to strike the city of Izmail actually crossed into Romanian airspace.

“Witnesses say one of the drones crashed in Romania. Romania is a NATO member state!”

On Thursday, the Romanian Ministry of Defence responded to the mayor of Ceatalchioi commune’s statement claiming that Russian drones involved in the Izmail port attack crossed into Romania, with one falling in the forest.

However, the Ministry of Defence stated that no evidence was found at the scene to support this claim, according to Digi24.ro

A Romanian government spokesperson said: “MApN self-reported after seeing the media reports. He sent a research team to the scene, which did not find anything to confirm the information that appeared in the public space,

“A team of specialists from the Romanian Air Force went to the site during this day to investigate the reported situations.

“Up to this moment, no concrete elements have been identified to prove the hypotheses circulated.”

A further statement from the Romanian military described Russia‘s drone strikes as “illegal” and “unjustified” but said the attacks did not breach Romania’s airspace at any point.

The statement read: “A team of specialists from the Romanian Air Force went to the site during this day to investigate the reported situations.

“Up to this moment, no concrete elements have been identified to prove the hypotheses circulated.

“Regarding the situation generated by the attacks carried out in the last week, which targeted elements of the Ukrainian port infrastructure in the towns of Ismail and Reni, from the evaluations of the structures with responsibilities of the Ministry of National Defense, no direct military threats to the national territory were identified or territorial waters of Romania.

“The drones used by the Russian Federation in these illegal and unjustified attacks did not cross Romania’s airspace at any time.”
